Fujitsu has just unveiled new software which can take your pulse just by looking at your image in a smartphone or tablet.
The software can operate on any device that has a camera and Fujitsu says it hopes to have the technology in practical use within a year.
It works by measuring variations in the brightness of a person’s face caused by the flow of blood and Fujitsu said that by simply pointing a camera at a person’s face for five seconds was enough to take their pulse.
The company said: “Even at a busy workplace, or any time a person is sitting in front of a PC, whether for teleconferencing or writing emails, their pulse can be measured during brief moments of quiet.
“At home, a camera built into a TV can measure the pulse of people relaxing in front of it, or a mirror for when people are getting ready in the morning.”
Fujistsu said pulse detectors built into gates at event sites, such as concerts, could detect people in poor health.
Detectors could also be used at control points in airports to identify anyone acting suspiciously.
