YouTube is more popular than traditional television and has overtaken the TV set as of the viewing platform of choice, it has been claimed.
Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt made the claim when asked whether he thought YouTube could one day overtake TV watching as a medium.
He responded: “That’s already happened.”
The Google boss was speaking at a media event where he said that the video sharing site had not nearly yet reached its true potential to gain mass audiences.
It was recently announced that YouTube now had around one billion unique visitors per month but Schmidt added: “That’s nothing – wait until you get to six or seven billion.”
The executive chairman said: “(Youtube is) not a replacement for something that we know. It’s a new thing that we have to think about, to program, to curate and build new platforms.”
Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s global head of content, said the social video platform was different to TV and was able to better engage with its audience.
He said: “I thought that YouTube was like TV, but it isn’t. I was wrong. TV is one-way. YouTube talks back.
“TV means reach. YouTube means engagement.”
