McDonalds took the unusual step today of telling its 962,000 Twitter followers that it did not hack into the account of fast-food rival Burger King.
They tweeted out after the Burger King Twitter account was hacked and rebranded with the McDonalds logo – even its Twitter name was changed to McDonalds @BurgerKing – and the account is currently suspended.
Even though the BurgerKing Twitter account is currently down, a search on Google gives the top search result:
“McDonalds (BurgerKing) on Twitter” and continues:
“The latest from McDonalds (@BurgerKing). BURGER KING® USA official Twitter account. Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped…”
The first sign of the hack came when the official Burger King account tweeted to its 89,000 followers: “We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you.”
Several other spoof posts followed before the account was suspended and McDonalds tweeted on its own official account: “We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking.”
