I was half joking when I speculated yesterday that a cup of coffee with Apple CEO Tim Cook could reach $1,000,000 at auction.

Well 24 hours on, and the chance to spend an hour over coffee with Mr Cook at Apple’s HQ in Cupertino, California, has now attracted a bid of $580,000…and there are still 18 days left to bid.

The way things are going it could well go for a million dollars after all…or even more.

Proceeds from the charity auction are going to the Robert F Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. Bids kicked off on Wednesday at $6,000 but after just eight hours it had smashed through the $100,000 barrier as news spread on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Photographer Jason Denning, who bid $130,o00 for the Coffee with Cook event, said he had hoped to talk to the Apple CEO about human rights in Asia.

The auction is taking place on the Charitybuzz website where it has already smashed through its previous highest “experience” bid…$255,000 to shadow former US president Bill Clinton for a day.

CharityBuzz said: “The highest bid we’ve had in our history was the winning $610,000 bid for a 2013 Lamborghini Aventador roadster to benefit One Drop.

“The highest bid for an experience at Charitybuzz was a $255,000 winning bid to spend a day shadowing President Bill Clinton to benefit the Clinton Foundation.”

However it will have a very long way to go indeed if it is to come close to the $3.46m paid by a group of investors in 2012 for lunch with the financier Warren Buffett.
